3. Transition training
Sophie and Katie attended Transition training in Totnes 28 February/ 1 March. Sophie gave a brief run down of the course. To be discussed again at the next meeting if Katie would like to add anything (Katie absent).
A CD of all the presentations is available, anyone who would like to see it should contact Sophie or Katie. DA21 and Transition Dorchester are also arranging for training to take place in Dorset. PEAT members showed interest in recreating some of the exercises that took place during the training and would also like the opportunity to get to know each other better – an afternoon out at a weekend was suggested. This is to be arranged for somewhere close to nature.
Agreed we would take some minutes/ action points from now on, as suggested during training.
- Sophie to set up Doodle poll – people can then show when they are available so a date can be arranged for the day out
- Sophie to send out transition training dates for Dorset
4. Funding – Katie and Sarah A (both absent).
Group had a discussion about whether we would need a constitution if we are to apply for funding.
- Collette will find out from Totnes what constitution they have so we don’t need to start from scratch
- Beryl to contact Emma Stevens and Dorset Community Action for her advice and also the list of 400 voluntary groups in Purbeck
5. Task teams reports
PEAT on the Screen – Louise, Collette and Katie.
All booked up for Purbeck Aware month.
- Crude Awakening – Square and Compass, Worth Matravers, 21 May, Louise Robinson (speaker)
- Message in the Waves – Studland Study Centre – 4 June, Steve Trewellen
- Power of Community – Corfe Castle village hall, 6 June, Andy McKee
- Age of Stupid or 11th Hour – Rex Cinema, Wareham, 11 June, Mark Constantine.
It may be too early to screen Age of Stupid, still working this out. All venues free to use except Rex which is £100. All screenings free to view. There will be time for discussion after each film and refreshments.
Reskilling – Toby
Changing name to the more positive ‘Skill Sharing’.
There are now three people running the day, aim to run it before May half-term. Considering involving police for security tagging for bikes and security. Still trying to find a venue. Town council properties and gardens suggested. Suggestion that the credit crunch is used as another angle, food preservation? Also how to make household cleaning products.
- Group to organise the first Skill Sharing day before May half-term.
Communications – Katherine
The aim of the group is to define who we are trying to reach and to develop coherent messages. Although the Transition Handbook lays out many of the messages, it’s important for us to adapt this to suit our group and area.
Once the messages have been developed and agreed we will need to promote PEAT more, we definitely need posters and leaflets in time for the film viewings. There’s also some other opportunities coming up in Swanage; environment day, sharing practical skills and garden makeovers (Vicky).
- Group to develop messages and present these to the rest of PEAT at the next meeting.
Cookbook – Katherine
First meeting to develop a cookbook featuring local, seasonal veg held tonight. The aim is to finalise the cookbook by the end of May.
- Katherine to request recipes from PEAT members
Schools – Ian
A great way to reach people is through their children. Can we work with schools to get children, and parents, involved? Ian asked if anyone has any contacts in the education system – contacts detailed passed on of Alison Alum. Louise also involved with schools. We should also think about giving talks to other community groups. Dorchester Transition have a bank of speakers we can use until we have built up another knowledge and experience.
- Ian to contact Alison Alum
- Louise to think about how Transition could be introduced to schools
- Beryl to ask community groups she’s working with (re cookbook) to find out if any of them are interested in having speakers
6. Discussion session
There was some confusion over how Transition and PEAT works together. The group will remain as PEAT, but Transition is the process or path we have chosen to follow. We will need to think about how it will work with PEAT being part of DA21 and then also taking on Transition; this could be confusing.
There was some discussion about whether we should be Transition Isle of Purbeck or Transition Purbeck; the group decided on the later.
The group decided that it would be better for us to talk about how PEAT is working and what we all want to get out of it during our afternoon out. Could we make this a full day out?
For the skills audit, groups got together to draw up a list of the skills required under each category (skills for the group, knowledge skills and practical skills for a transition to lower energy) for an ‘open space’ session.
- Each leader of the open space groups to share their lists with others through the blog
7. Green map – Sarah A
Sarah absent – postpone until next meeting.
8. Sustainable Communities Initiative – Beryl
During the February the council agreed to the Sustainable Communities Initiative. We also need to look at funding available, application period closes in April. Chalk and Cheese are also interested in receiving applications from Purbeck. What do we need money for? We can still apply for funding through DA21, but if we want to apply in our own right, we will need to register as an organisation ourselves and agree a constitution. (See previous point).
We need to establish a fundraising group. Beryl has offered to be the chair.
- Anyone interested in being a part of the fundraising team please contact Beryl.
9. AOB
Paul; The Purbeck Film Festival are interested in featuring PEAT screenings. To be explored further.
Tara; Do we want a carnival float at the Swanage Carnival? Louise, Janine, Brett and Collette agreed to work with Tara on this. We should not have a motorised float, can we have it pulled by bicycles?
Next meeting; Wednesday 15 April in Wareham.
- New carnival task team to look into having a float at Swanage Carnival
- Mary to check if we can hold the next meeting at the Antelope
