Fracking is the process of fracturing shale rock using high pressure fluids and chemicals to access the natural gas trapped within in. The process, which is common in the US, uses enormous amounts of water along with toxic chemicals which contaminates the water. Some people living near by can set light to their tap water!
The BBC reported in December 2010 that fracking is coming to the UK. They reported that Geoff Maitland, professor of energy engineering at London’s Imperial College said “There are good indications both in the Lancashire area, and in Dorset in the onshore Kimmeridge shales”.
The new film Gasland, makes it crystal clear that we do not want this in Purbeck – or anywhere – but we are particularly at risk here due to the large deposits of shale at Kimmeridge.

Happy to help with fracking campaign. I think it’s urgent that we get up to speed eg show Gaslands before the companies come sweet-talking the council.
